A fashionable and comfortable hat with a large polar bear in front (an old Norwegian knitting tradition).
100 % natural wool
Due to its exceptional properties that no synthetic fibers can match, wool is back in fashion. Wool is nature’s own ''high-tech'' fiber. It has great insulating abilities, it breathes and wicks moisture away from the body, is odor resistant – and it is a completely natural fiber!
Our collections are designed with different types of wool adapted to each product. Over the past 140 years we have fine-tuned our knitting techniques, making garments with superior long-lasting qualities.
Norwegian wool
The Norwegian wool is known for its exceptional long-lasting quality and crisp, appealing look. This makes it excellent for durable mid- and outer-layer knitwear. Norwegian wool is one of the world’s most eco- and animal-friendly textile fibers, due to the sheep’s natural mountain life. Our Norwegian wool comes from the “dalasau” (valley sheep”), known for roaming freely in the vast Norwegian hillsides while grazing in natural pastures.
Merino wool
Our merino wool is of the highest quality with a certified animal-friendly origin. These lightweight and soft garments can be worn next to skin without discomfort, ideal for year-round use. And, of course, our merino wool is mulesing free.
Norwegian design knitted in Norway
From raw wool to finished products, our knitwear has been fine-tuned with 140 years of experience.
Dale of Norway is one of the very few textile companies with production in Norway. This makes our skilled staff able to pay close attention to every stage of the production process, which ensures the premium quality of every Dale of Norway garment. Decorative elements such as the pewter clasps, woven braids and leather patches are all made in Norway.
Due to the cold winters, Norway has a long tradition in wool and knitwear. This provides us with a rich heritage of beautiful patterns, inspired by nature and history. Over the past 140 years, we have developed our own designs, and redesigned age-old Norwegian patterns, turning them into garments for fashion and sport with an authentic history. Since 1956, we have been outfitting the national Norwegian ski team with official sweaters for all Winter Olympic Games and World Championships.
Many of our skilled staff members have worked at the factory most of their lives, going back several generations. They are a part of a 140 year-long chain of employees, contributing to the development of beautiful designs with long-lasting and comfortable qualities.
History
The village of Dale is nestled between steep mountains, waterfalls and fjords on the west coast of Norway. In 1872, Peder Jebsen travelled through the small village of Dale, located close to the city of Bergen. He recognized Dale as an ideal place to establish a premium textile production facility utilizing the valley’s potential for natural hydro power, the easy access to Norwegian wool and strong knitting traditions.
Peder Jebsen secured the rights to the local waterfalls and soon thereafter, steamboats loaded with new machines from England arrived in Dale. The Dale of Norway textile facility was completed in 1879 and has remained active in the village of Dale ever since.
From the beginning, the focus was set on crafting premium wool qualities. We quickly grew to be the largest employer in the region. Skilled knitters and artisans joined our company, often followed by their family members. Subsequently, this experience and expertise was passed on to the next generation.
Being one of the very few textile companies with production in Norway, we are able to pay close attention to every stage of the production. This ensures premium quality in every garment – a Dale of Norway trademark since 1879.
