The microphone's smaller dimensions contribute to an exceptionally compact appearance that nevertheless fits in with the classic Neumann design. The elegant shape together with the chrome-plated ring catches your attention at first glance. Inside the microphone is a newly developed large-diaphragm microphone capsule with cardioid characteristics. The maximum sound pressure (SPL) is 144 dB, which is a value that allows the TLM 102 to be used even for recording very loud instruments such as percussion, drums or guitar amplifiers. Thanks to its fast transient response, it is suitable for all musical instruments. But his main domain is the voice - both singing and the spoken word. The frequency curve is flat with a slight rise above 6kHz, which guarantees minimal voice coloration and clean bass delivery. To suppress contact noises, the capsule is stored in a flexible hinge. In addition to protecting the capsule, the cover grid also serves as a pop-filter to remove lips when recording singing and spoken word. Thanks to its price and universal use, the TLM 102 is an ideal microphone for home recording studios, project studios, small TV and radio. In January 2011, the TLM 102 microphone won the TEC Award - 1st place in the Microphone Recording Technology category. It is produced in matte nickel and matte black.
The cardioid directional microphone is designed to be most sensitive to sounds coming directly from the front and less sensitive to sounds coming from the sides and back. This directional pattern resembles the shape of a heart (hence the name "cardioid") and is ideal for situations where it is necessary to focus on a single sound source and minimize ambient noise.
