Opinel - Knives with Story
The Opinel Knife Story began in the 19th century in Albiez-Le-Vieux, France. Trader Victor-Amédée Opinel founds the first forge to use the knowledge of forging nails he has acquired on his travels. Over time, production is being expanded to include the production of sharp objects, especially sickles and scythes, which are widely known. In 1890, Joseph Opinel, the grandson of the founder of the workshop, driven by the desire for manual processing and modern technology, produces the first, pocket, folding knife. The elegant simplicity and perfect functionality of the Opinel knives will be awarded a gold medal at the Turin Industrial Exhibition in 1911 - and today millions of pieces are produced in almost unchanged design.
Knives are made in the Savoy Alps in France, where they are hand-assembled and ground. Handle wood also comes from France, from a permanently sustainable forest. The blades are made of high-quality, corrosion-resistant Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel or XC90 carbon steel, which keeps the shape in contact with harder material due to the addition of carbon.
In 1955, Opinel folding knives - from N ° 06 - were fitted with a safety ring that serves as a blade lock. Thanks to VIROBLOC, the blade is locked not only in the open position - in use, but also in the closed position - for example, during transport. This makes the Opinel brand a universal knife for everyone.
